Latin Teachers I Have Known

I wrote in an earlier blog how important Latin is. Yesterday it occured to me I have met a lot of Latin teachers during my life. The first was Orpha Euverard. I probably spelled her last name incorrectly. That's what it sounded like to me as a child. I remember going to her house for dinner with my family. The next one was Madeleine Campbell, who actually taught me Latin in high school. When I first became a teacher, I had a colleague named Mrs. Ridenour who taught Latin at Miami Trace High School. Then it was on to Stow where Kathryn Harrah taught Latin at Stow High School for many years. She hosted a baby shower for me before Elizabeth was born. After Mrs. Harrah came the marvelous McCaffreys. They not only were teachers, but part of our lives as well. They attended our graduation parties and our weddings. Seen here is Tom McCaffrey at one of our family celebrations.

Dog with Big Ear

Yesterday I had surgery to get rid of my trigger finger. It was an interesting and relatively painless procedure. If you look closely, you will still see the x marks the spot on the top of my larger than life thumb. There is a joke in here somewhere.

September 11

The city of Akron commemorated September 11 by placing a flag at Goodyear Park for each person who died that day. We stopped and walked through the display for a few minutes. It was an amazing and sobering display, because there were so many flags.

Flashback Friday

Is the love of books in the genes? This is a picture of three boys - two who will go nameless and my father. He is the one reading the book. Someone took this picture about 1914. The Watson family went camping quite a bit - hence the tent in the background.

Richard and company

For the last thirty years the Ohio State Marching Band Alumni have been performing at the first home football game. The group numbered over 700 this year. Richard's good friend Ray, the best man at our wedding, flew in from Las Vegas. They had a grand time playing golf, talking with old friends, playing their instruments, marching and cheering for OSU.
